On September 11, 2020, hundreds of protestors gathered outside the courthouse during a pre-trial hearing that changed the trajectory of justice for George Floyd’s family. This was the day Judge Cahill disqualified attorney Mike Freeman from prosecuting the case. Freeman had a reputation for helping officers evade accountability. Ultimately, the case was reassigned to Attorney General Keith Ellison who appointed a special prosecution team. That team successfully convicted a white cop for the first time in Minnesota history.
